Getting back into the swing of things...

Wow! We have had a great start to the school year! The students have fallen into a routine and are really enjoying their new responsibilities this year.

The Hayes Transitions Office Center is up and running!  Many thanks to the Hayes staff for providing us with fun and meaningful jobs for the students to complete.  Our students are developing skills that will help them to be successful in the workforce such as using a copy machine (and more importantly... fixing a copy machine), laminating display materials, cutting with precision, and sorting and filing financial forms.  This week, many of our seniors will be heading out of the building to begin work internships in the community.  This is a great opportunity for them to gain work experience, learn to travel using public transportation, and give back to the community in a positive way.

In the area of independent living, the students have really taken to caring for our classroom pet, Oreo the guinea pig.  Also, we have been working on our laundry skills, thanks to the athletic and consumer science departments.  Though, the most important skill the students have been working on this week is developing social skills by learning the proper way to meet and greet individuals in a formal setting. It has been awesome watching our students come out of their shells by introducing themselves, shaking hands, and making connections with staff members outside of our classroom.

We have a great group of students and a great group of supportive parents!  A big thank you to all of the parents that came out for Open House tonight.  We are so excited to be working with you and your students and look forward to many more opportunities to share the wonderful things happening in the Hayes Transitions classroom!

Oreo loving all of the attention from his new family!
