Welcome Back!

We have had a fantastic start to the 2013 - 2014 school year! The students jumped back into the swing of things like we had never left for break.  We wanted to share a few reminders with students and parents:

1.  Seniors were given their Jostens packets with information about ordering caps, gowns, graduation announcements, and senior novelty items.  Jostens will be back on September 28, 2013 to collect orders and down payments.  Ask your student for their packet tonight!

2.  Picture day is Thursday, August 22, 2013.  Order forms were sent home earlier this week.  All students must have their picture taken, but it is not necessary to purchase a picture package.

3.  Open House is Thursday, August 27, 2013 at 6:30 pm.  Stop in to visit us and meet the new administrators!

We are looking forward to a great year!

DATA Bus

Yesterday in the Hayes Transitions class, we were lucky enough to have a representative from the Delaware Area Transit Agency come in to do a presentation on using the Data Bus to travel around Delaware County using demand response and fixed routes.  Did you know you can take a bus ride to any location in Delaware County for only 50 cents?  Wow!  What an economical way to travel!

Parents, FREE individualized travel training is available for your students through the Delaware Area Transit Agency.  All you need to do is contact Data Bus at (740) 363 - 3355 to schedule your student's travel training lessons.  Also, below is information about summer youth passes to help your students get from point A to point B over the summer months.  Check out all that DATA Bus has to offer at http://www.ridedata.com/index.html.

Field Trip to Bob Evans

On Thursday, 3/7/2012, the Hayes Transitions class will be taking a field trip to Bob Evans.  Permission slips have been sent home with students and must be returned by Wednesday, 3/6/2012, if students plan to attend.  Also, each student is being asked to bring in $10.00 to purchase brunch during our outing.  

YMCA

We are very lucky to have so many wonderful job sites in the Delaware community.  The supervisors at each of our work sites go out of their way to provide our students with hands on learning opportunities to prepare them for employment after graduation.  

Check out our student, Zack, learning how to run the Kaivac in the videos.  Frank, at the Delaware YMCA, is a natural teacher and Zack is learning so much about facility maintenance during his volunteer time at the YMCA!

Hayes HS McDonald's Student of the Month!!!!

Congratulations to our student, Zach Longworth, for being chosen as the Delaware Hayes High School Student of the Month!!  There were many nominations but Zach's hard work, school pride, and positive attitude out-shown all of the competition!

Tortilla Pizza Deliciousness!

Parents,

Do you need a night off from cooking dinner?  Well, Hayes Transitions has the solution!  Cooking  and doing basic chores at home will help your students practice and master the skills we are learning at school.  

Next time you are at the store, pick up some flour tortillas, pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, and your favorite pizza toppings!  Your student knows how to do the rest!  Today, we learned about Martin Luther King, Jr and how his vision and hard work helped to make our melting pot Delaware community the way it is today.  We also took some time to make tortilla pizzas!  All you need is the ingredients listed above and an oven preheated to 375 degrees.  Bake the tortilla pizzas for 8 - 10 minutes and, VOILA, dinner is done!

Delaware County Transition Fair

The Delaware County Transition Fair will be held at Big Walnut High School on January 30, 2013 from 5:30 -7:30.  Transportation is available from Hayes High School to Big Walnut High School for families wishing to attend.  Please contact Mrs. McCoy or Mrs. Friedrich for more information on transportation.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Has it really been that long since we last updated our blog?  We have been so busy having fun that we lost track of time!  Happy New Year to all of our friends and family! We wish you all the best for 2013!

So what has been going on in the Hayes Transitions class?  We have been busy with lots of exciting learning experiences to prepare our students for the "real world"!  Before the holiday break, the class had a hot chocolate fundraiser to earn money for Toys for Tots.  The students created a product, a yummy one too, determined how much money they would need to sell the hot chocolate for in order to  make a profit, and sold it to the teachers and their peers during lunch periods everyday for almost a month.  In the end we had made enough money to take everyone on a special trip to Toys R Us where they picked out the perfect gifts to make the holidays a special time for children in need in Delaware County.  We even had time to head over to Polaris Mall for lunch and to do a little holiday shopping of our own!  

Also, the students worked to design, create, and build the Hayes Transitions Villa Apartments.  The students designed floor plans for their apartments by using graph paper to measure and draw templates to build the floor, exterior walls, and bedroom walls in their gingerbread apartments.  They used their cooking skills to make the gingerbread dough, used their templates to cut out the floor and walls to their buildings, and then followed directions to bake their gingerbread dough into perfect building materials.  We have quite a few future architects in our group!  Before they could build and decorate their apartments, the students completed roommate compatibility surveys to find their perfect roommate, a rental application, a lease agreement, a roommate contract, and wrote checks to their future landlords for rental application fees and security deposits.  Finally, the students decorated their new apartments to show off at our Hayes Transitions Open House.

A big thanks to all of our community friends, family members, staff members, and the Delaware County Board of Elections for stopping by to visit us and check out the apartments at our open house in December.  It was very exciting to see so many people there to support our students, teachers, and classroom goals.  The students worked really hard getting ready for the open house event by making invitations for their favorite people, creating a menu, and preparing appetizers for our guests to enjoy.

Since we have been back in the classroom, we started to discuss and investigate possible future careers, traveling independently around the community, and the positive and negative aspects of using social media.  Yesterday, the students read an article from Scholastic about how the things we post on Facebook could have negative consequences in our lives.  Then we created a class list of the "DOs and DON'Ts" when using Facebook or other types of social media.  It was a really great learning experience for everyone and I must say, we already have some technology savvy young adults in our midst.  Check back soon for pictures of all of these exciting events and more updates from us on our journey to become successful, independent adults!

Thanksgiving Dinner

We have so much to be thankful for in the Hayes Transitions classroom!  We have an amazing group of  students, a dedicated staff, and a wonderful community to be a part of!  Our students have really blossomed these past few months.  They are hard workers both academically and vocationally.  And judging by the smiles across our dinner table today, they are fantastic cooks too!

The students worked so hard this past week to prepared for our Thanksgiving dinner!   The students made cheesy potato casserole, noodles, green beans, corn, chocolate pudding pie, and homemade pumpkin pie to go along with our turkey and stuffing!  Thank you to Mrs. Sherrer and her Food and Nutrition students for help with the turkey and stuffing that completed our meal.

While, we do take advantage of any excuse to eat and celebrate together, there is always a purpose behind our activities in the Hayes Transitions classroom.  By working together to prepare for today, we were able to develop our team work skills, practice our cooking abilities and the household chores that go along with making a large meal.  We also were able to assess each student on the social soft skills that are necessary as an independent and employable adult, such as interacting with others in an appropriate manner, public speaking, making eye contact, starting and maintaining a conversation, and using proper etiquette and manners during a sit down meal.

Just another day at the job site!

Can you imagine a better way to spend your afternoon at school? This beats sitting in the classroom anyday! A huge thank you to all of our community partners that allow our students to work with them daily to gain job experience and skills needed for after graduation.

Presidential Elections 2012

What an amazing day the students and staff in the Hayes Transitions class had yesterday! Our students had the opportunity to spend the day participating first hand in the 2012 presidential elections by greeting voters at two different Delaware, Ohio voting locatiions. A huge thank you goes out to the Delaware County Board of Elections for coordinating this wonderful opportunity for our students. Can you imagine a better way to teach students about the important role United States citizens play in their Nation's government than to involve them in the democratic voting process? 

 Not only did our students gain a better understanding of how the popular vote of the people impacts which Presidential candidate is elected into office, but they also gained valuable interpersonal skills that will carry over when they are independent adults in the community and in the workforce, contributed to the community in a positive way, and many of our students were able to be a part of the voting process for the first time as they cast their own vote for local, state and national government officials. 

 We had such a great time meeting and talking with the community members in our city as they came out to vote yesterday. We sincerely hope the community members enjoyed the experience as much as our students and staff did and we hope to see you all again at the next election!

Bullying Prevention Awareness Month

October is Bullying Prevention Awareness Month.  The class was asked to share their thoughts on bullying by answering these three questions: "What is bullying?, Why is bullying wrong?, and How can we help stop bullying from happening?".  Check out our student avatar, created at www.voki.com,  to see what the class is saying about bullying!

Important Reminders

Just a few important reminders for our parents and students.  First term report cards will be sent home with students on Monday, so don't forget to check those backpacks!  Also, Parent Teacher Conferences are on November 15, 2012.  Don't forget to call the main office at 833 - 1010 to make your appointment with us.

Elections are are coming up fast!  The Hayes Transitions class will be volunteering at the polls on November 6, 2012.  Permission slips will be sent home next week.

End of the 1st Quarter

Wow! We can hardly believe the first 9 weeks are over! This quarter has really flown by because we have been so busy here in the Transition Room!  To sum up the quarter, we spent a lot of time today cleaning, cooking, and starting a recycling program in our room.  We continued learning about recycling and ways to help keep the environment clean and healthy.  Mrs. F made a trip over to the City Hall and brought back recycling bins for our classroom.  Did you know you if live in the Delaware City area, your family can get recycling bins for curbside pick-up for free?  It's true, just head over to the Delaware City Hall building.

Today, the students were given a cooking assessment to see how well they could make a meal with only written directions.  Each student made their own egg sandwich by cooking eggs in the microwave.    Then adding the egg to toasted English muffins. Yum!  They also worked with a partner to create a delicious pitcher full of mixed berry smoothies.  The smoothies were fantastic and we had lots left over so we made a trip to the main office and guidance office to share our goodies.

                   

Hayes Transition Students Have A LOT to Say!

The coolest thing happened today! 

 As we were showing the class the pictures on the blog from our trip to the Rumpke Recycling Center, someone in the class asked "How did you make the blog?" That one question sparked a fire in the all of the students. We asked how many of them would like to have a blog of their own and EVERYONE raised their hands! And that was all it took to get the ball rolling! 

 The students in our class spent the afternoon creating their own blogs on the topic of their choice. They have a lot of different interests and a lot to say to the world! We have blogs on technology, bowling, skateboarding, games, horses, superheroes, and just life as a teenager in general! If you have time, check out our students' blogs on the left. We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we will!

Rumpke Recycling Trip

What an amazing and busy day we had today! Our class made three exciting stops on our field trip. First, we stopped at Miller's Country Gardens to purchase pumpkins to decorate for Hayes' Haunt the Halls community event on October 27th. Students picked out their perfect pumpkin, weighed their pumpkin, and used a calculator to estimate the cost of the pumpkin. Each student had to determine how much their pumpkin would cost by multiplying the cost, $0.29 per pound, by the weight of their perfect pumpkin.

After leaving Miller's, we headed down to Columbus to visit the Rumpke Recycling Plant. Talk about a cool place to visit! We were met by the Rumpke staff and given a tour of the recycling facility as well as had an opportunity to learn a little more about recycling and ask questions. Did you know that it takes about 60 days for a recycled soda can to go from your curb to back to the store shelf? BUT ... when you throw your empty soda can in the trash, it takes over 500 years for it to decompose in a landfill. We are planning to use our new knowledge of recycling to encourage the students and staff at Hayes to start recycling more at school! 

Then we headed over to McDonald's, where each student was able to pick out their own lunch, order their lunch, and pay for their lunch independently. They did awesome and we were all stuffed and worn out by the time we made our way back to Hayes!

We had a blast at the homecoming dance tonight!  Everyone looked so fantastic ... even the teachers! ;) It was awesome watching our students show off their moves on the dance floor.

Homecoming

The homecoming dance is tomorrow night!  We will be meeting in the Hayes Transition classroom at 6:30 to do hair, makeup, eat pizza, and take pictures before heading to the dance in the Gym!  We already have tickets for all of our students that said they were coming!  Mrs. McCoy, Mrs. Friedrich, and Ms. Emily will be here from 6:30pm - 9:30pm to provide supervision for our dance goers.

We can’t wait to see all of our ladies and gentlemen dressed up and ready to dance the night away!

Rumpke Recycling Center Field Trip

Next Monday, 10/15/2012, is our field trip to Miller's Gardens and the Rumpke Recycling Center.  We will leave Hayes around 9:30 am and return by 2:00 pm.   Students were given Field Trip Permission Slips today to have signed by their teachers and parents.  Please return the forms to Mrs. McCoy or Mrs. Friedrich ASAP!  For your convenience, a click the link in the comment box to obtain an additional copy of the Pre-Arranged Absence Form.  The form is to be turned in no later than Friday, 10/12/2012.
